The team did not release the movie to CBFC for examination before its release because of which CBFC did not clear it. Despite being banned in 4 states, the film has been released today at theaters all over India with police security. In 2018, six Indian states have banned the film from being exhibited in theaters on the grounds that it distorts historical facts and disrespects a legend. The movie was scheduled to be released by January 25, but got delayed after a Karni Sena activist damaged a camera during a shoot in Rajasthan's Shekhawati region on January 22nd. The film Padmaavat also uses an earlier version of the poem by Malik Mohammad Jayasi that was adapted into the song by Sufi singer Jagjit Singh, named "Gora Siya Ke" (Majhla Gora Siya Ke). The title of the English song is "Padmavati" which may have been inspired by Jagjit Singh's rendition. The film was banned in Karnataka on 21 January 2018, following protests from the Shiv Sena for reportedly distorting facts. On 22 January, it was banned in Rajasthan as well. Video footage of Karni Sena members burning effigy and threatening to vandalize cinemas were released.
